- converse in English except when talking to his mother
- believes in Western education
- was not raised in a wealthy family but earned his wealth although he wanted to hide this fact
- loves his mother and she stayed with him before her passing
- respects his mother's belief and practices of the Chinese rituals although he does not practise it
- reminded his daughter to respect his mother

- missed his mother very much after her passing

Ah Ma
- 90 years old
- has cataracts that stop her from seeing very well but refused to go for operation

- very fond of her memories when Mr Li was still a boy
- often shares her memory with Mr Li but he grew tired listening to it
