TIPS:

1)	Leave out unnecessary details.
	eg: Ehsan who lives in Taman Sungai Pusu scored straight As in his SPM examination.
	Main Idea: Ehsan scored straight As in his SPM examination.
2)	Do not include examples/ lists.
	eg: Solehah likes sweet fruits such as durians, rambutans and ripe mangoes.
	Main Idea: Solehah likes sweet fruits.
3)	Do not include elaboration.
	eg: Asrul came home late. It was after midnight that he arrived at the main gate.
	Main Idea: Asrul came home late / Asrul came home after midnight.
4)	Leave out repetition.
	eg: He is a very fat man. He certainly is not thin. It is even difficult for him to pass through the door.
	Main Idea: He is a very fat man.
5)	Do not include too descriptive expressions.
	eg: She wore a pretty dress. It was made of pink lace with a huge bow at the back.  There were  sequins which glittered under the light, all over the dress
	Main Idea: She wore a pretty dress.
6)	Change direct speech to indirect speech.
	eg: “You have to put in more effort. Do not spend too much time watching television. Reduce the number of hours that you spend on the Internet. As a result, you will do well in your studies,” said Danial’s mother.
	Main Idea: In order to do well in his studies, Danial’s mother advised him to work harder and avoid spending too much time on the television and the Internet.
7)	Replace a group of words with one word.
	eg: Mukmin bought a pair of Camel pants, a Nike shirt and a Levi’s jacket from KLCC.
	Main Idea: Mukmin bought some branded clothes from KLCC.
8)	Use linkers and conjunctions for cohesion.
	Sample: but, and, so, because, although, then, after that, However, Moreover, Furthermore, consequently, Finally, Later, Besides, Next, Eventually, instead.
